Comenzamos desmontando las piezas de la guitarra. Con una hoja de cutter y mucha paciencia sacamos la pintura antigua. También utilizamos en el proceso un soplete y una espátula.

We began the work removing the hardware and with a cutter blade, blowtorch and a spatula we removed the old painting.

Restauración de una guitarra eléctrica / Restoring Electrig Guitar / Riparante Elektran Gitaron

Hace un par de años llegó a mis manos una guitarra eléctrica de dudoso orígen. Quién me la vendió aseguraba que era una Norton, marca de guitarras hechas en Uruguay, en los años 60 según tengo entendido. En aquella época, en Uruguay se fabricaban, además de las Norton, que aparentemente eran un poco mejores, las Klington y las Black Diamond. Digo que el orígen de la guitarra es bastante dudoso, porque uno de los micrófonos tiene en relieve la forma de un rombo, y yo he visto alguna Black Diamond con ese tipo de imágen en sus mics. Tampoco realmente sé si originalemnte se trataba de una guitarra, me parece, por ciertas marcas que vi en el cuerpo al realizar la restauración y por el extraño largo de escala original, que se trataba de un bajo de escala corta. En una serie de artículos iré mostrando la transformación de esta guitarra. Comienzo, mostrando su lastimoso estado original, con la pintura craquelada y en pésimas condiciones, uno de los micrófonos inservibles, el pickguard, evidentemente no original y hecho de un material de bastante mala calidad, el circuito eléctrico inexistente, etc. Es probable que alguien haya intentado restaurar el isntrumento en el pasado, porque me encontré con varias capas de pintura antes de la madera. Por otro lado, las clavijas estaban puestas en una posición que, para ser benévolos, vamos a calificar de surrealista. Bueno, sin más auí vanlas fotos de la guitarra como estaba cuando llegó a mis manos:

A couple of years ago I adquired a Norton guitar. These guitars were produced in Uruguay in the 60s. There were two other branches that I know, Klington and Black Diamond. The seller told me this one was a Norton, but I am not sure as one of the pick ups has the shape of a diamond, somthing similar I saw in a Black Diamond. It is supposed that Nortons were a little bit better than the other ones. I also found that this instrument could have been a SHort scale bass instead of a guitar, because the scale has a bizarre lenght and also because of some signs I found in the body. The guitar condition was critical, someone intended to repiar it before with evident lack of knowledge. THe tuning keys, for eample, were in what we can call a "surrealistic" position. Totally useless. THa painting wa terrible, the pickguard made of a very poor material, the elctric circuit broken and one of the pick ups in non working condition. I will be writing articles showing the complete process of restoration. And now, let me introduce the photoraphs of this guitar showing the original condition of it:

Bulldog (guitarra eléctrica Swan)

Terminé la restauración de una guitarra eléctrica Swan. Jamás había oido de esa marca de guitarras y a quién me la vendió le habían dicho que la guitarra sea probablemente hecha en Alemania. Se ve bastante vieja, supongon que de los 70 o anterior. Lo cierto es que la guitarra es tan fea que de tan fea que es, es hermosa. Algo así como un perro bulldog...

El mástil de la guitarra está muy bien construido, por eso me extraña la forma en que fue unido al cuerpo. Nunca había visto algo así. Probablemente quién armó la guitarra no haya sido la misma persona que hizo el mástil.

Yendo a la restauración en sí, limpié las partes metálicas oxidadas con Sanafer, rectifiqué algunos trastes y fundamentalmente tuve que correr el puente que estaba mal puesto y la guitarra "mentía" descaradamente. A la altura del traste 12 había una diferencia de un semitono. Ahora está dentro de límites soportables. Al correr el puente tuve que rellenar el agujero en la madera que quedó y calar un poco el pickguard. También tuve que agregar dos protectores metálicos en la parte de atrás del cuerpo para que las cuerdas no dañen la madera.

La Swan hace honor a su nombre y como patito feo terminó sonando como un precioso cisne. Si bien en algunas partes puede ser algo incómoda para tocar, tiene un muy lindo sonido. Pronto pondré alguna muestra y más fotos para que escuchen y vean.

I just finish repairings on a Swan Guitar. I´ve never heard of this branch of guitars. Tha man who sold it to me was told that the guitar was probably from Germany. It looks old, from 70s or earlier. Certainly this guitar is so ugly, that becames beautiful, like a bulldog...

The neck is very well built, but it is strange the way it is attached to the body. i´ve never seen something like this before. Probably the person who built the neck is not the same oas the one who assembled it.

Regarding the restauration. I cleaned the metallic parts that have oxid, I repair the height of the frets and I had to move the bridge as there was a problem with tuning. In 12th fret the difference in tuning was of a half-tone. Changing the position of the bridge implied making a cut on the pickguard and filling a hole in the wood. I also had to put some metallic protectors in the back, to prevent the possible damage of the wood by the strings.

Swan honors its name, this ugly duckling became a precious swan to me. Maybe it is somehow uncomfortable in some places tobe played, but I really like the sound. Soon I´ll be adding sounds and mor photographs.

La kolo de la gitaro estas tre bona, kaj sxajnas ke la ulo kiu faris gxin ne esatas la sama ulo kiu muntis la gitaron, cxar la muntado estas vere stranga. Mi neniam vidis kelkan similen.

Pri mia laboro, mi korektis kelkajn fretojn, mi purigis la redoksaj partoj kaj mi devis movi la ponton por propra ludado. Ekzistis diferenco el unu duontono kiam oni atingis la 12a freto. Movi la ponton signifis fari sxangxojn en la "pickguard" kaj plenigi truo en la ligno. Mi ankaux metis metalaj sxirmoj en la korpo de la gitaro por ke la kordoj ne skrapu la ligno.

"Swan" meritas sian nomon, cxar laux mi, gxi estas malbela anaso kiu metamorfozis en bela cigno. Gxi ne estas tro komforta por ludi en kelkaj partoj de la kolo, sed la sono estas belega. Baldaux mi aldonos plu fotojn kaj sonojn.
